“… in chess just as in memory sports, the competition is where it all counts”
Dear memory athletes,
I have been following memory sports from a distance for some time now, and I can say that I see some similarities to my beloved game of chess:
Besides the fact that both are primarily activities of the mind, both are also marked by an emphasis on training and preparation, on constant improvement.
Of course, there are a lot of differences and specifics, but there are a lot of common things, and ultimately in chess just as in memory sports, the competition is where it all counts, where all the training and preparation is brought to bear and where the personality of each athlete shines through, everyone with their own unique approach.
I think it is also important to note that in memory sports as in chess, you have to give all you can, even if the mere outcome of a single match or tournament does not and cannot define the value of our efforts.
Let me wish every single one of you an enjoyable and successful preparation period in the weeks and months leading up to this year’s IAM World Memory Championship in beautiful Vienna, Austria. I think we can all look forward to a great event.
Kindest regards,
GM Anna Muzychuk
Women’s World Chess Champion
